Project Overview

LARC Construction was appointed by Nevada Construction to undertake the groundworks for the new Dartmoor Building at Derriford Hospital. This new facility comprises a fracture clinic, urgent treatment care centre, and outpatient services, playing a critical role in improving healthcare infrastructure in the region.

Scope of Works

Our groundworks package ensured a solid and structurally sound foundation for the new facility. Key tasks undertaken by LARC Construction included:

• Earthworks – Reducing ground levels and removing material in preparation for footings.
• Excavations – Trenching and excavation for pad foundations, lift shafts, retaining walls, attenuation tanks, and services.
• Steel Fabrication & Installation – Fabrication and placement of steel components, including retaining walls, pad reinforcements, lift shafts, and structural flooring.
• Concrete Works – Pouring and finishing concrete for foundations, retaining walls, plinths, upstands, external store floor slabs, and bolt box installations.
• Drainage Installation – Installation of deep surface water and foul drainage systems, including internal foul and storm drainage pop-ups.
• Shuttering & Formwork – Constructing formwork for lift shafts, retaining walls, upstands, plinths, steel columns, and recessed flooring.
• Pre-cast Lift Shaft – Installation of a pre-cast lift shaft to streamline construction.
• Substructure Block & Brickwork – Completing block and brickwork elements for the substructures.
• Reinstatement – Reinstatement of tarmac on footpaths and roads following construction activities.

Challenges & Solutions

One of the primary challenges of this project was working within a live hospital environment, requiring careful planning to minimize disruption to hospital operations. LARC Construction implemented phased work scheduling, effective traffic management, and close coordination with hospital staff to ensure safety and efficiency.

Additionally, the installation of the pre-cast lift shaft required precise logistical coordination to facilitate delivery and positioning within a constrained site. Our team collaborated closely with Nevada Construction to ensure smooth execution.

Outcome

LARC Construction successfully delivered the groundworks package to the highest standards, supporting the timely progression of the Dartmoor Building. Our expertise in structural groundwork, drainage, and steel fabrication played a crucial role in the seamless execution of this healthcare facility.
